The 20th MAC 24 Hour Challenge will be sailed at Rietvlei Milnerton. Local and upcountry sailors will converge in an attempt to break the 256km World Record.

Dinghies will be sailed non stop from noon Saturday, 28 October, to noon Sunday, 29 October. Teams of 8 sailors will sail the dinghies, 2 up, swopping every 2 hours in a relay type format.

Gerry Aab, who holds the current SA Record, will be coming down from Gauteng to sail the Event, to try and break his own record he set in 2000. He was just 6km short of the World Record sailing a GP14 Dinghy “Diel” with Springbok sailor, Ian Ainslie, and his team.

Westlancs Yacht Club in the UK recently hosted their 50th 24 Hour Event. They are the current record holders. MAC and Westlancs are the only two clubs with 24 Hour Events.

10 Sea Scout groups based throughout the Peninsula will be sailing their Saldanha Dinghies with 12 in a team. Royal Cape Yacht Club will also enter a youth team sailing a Saldanha.

The racing is exciting and offers sailors a unique experience as they carry on racing throughout the night – a first for many sailors. Many races have been lost when leading boats literally lose their way in the dark. Tactics come into play on the night shift.

A special 24 Hour Handicap System, which is based on dinghies previous performances is used to calculate the overall winner. The small 3m Mirror Dinghy have won previous events.

Everyone is welcome – entry is free. Anybody interested in sailing is welcome to come along and get up close tosailors and their teams as they change over on “change over” beach – some capsizing right on the shore line, much to the delight of spectators and fellow 24 Hour Sailors.
