2018 Bouckaert-Soenen Road Cycle Challenge

There are three races around Paarl Mountain, measuring 123 km, 72 km and 46 km.

123 km; 72 km: 46 km

All three routes have a common start point at De Poort from where riders will pass the Paarl Mall and Arboretum before turning right onto the Wemmershoek Road, passing under the N1 before turning left onto Drakenstein Road passing fruit orchards before crossing over the N1 near the Huguenot Toll Plaza. Cycle through olive grove country along Sonstraal and Swawelstert Roads before turning right onto Piet Retief Street. Riders turn left into Champagne Street and then pass over the railway line before the R44/Stokery Road robot.

123 km continued (1293 m of ascent)

At the R 44/Stokery Road robots the riders turn right and carry on along the R44 past vineyards and undulating wheatlands to Hermon where the route turns left on the R46 towards Riebeeck Kasteel to the climb through Bothmanskop Pass. A fast descent takes the riders to a left turn onto the R45 through open country heading back towards Paarl before turning right onto the Voor-Paardeberg Road then left onto the Paardeberg Road through vineyards to a fast downhill section then a gradual climb to the right turn onto the R 44.

A further climb takes riders past Windmeul continuing along the R 44 before turning left into Suid

Agter Paarl Road past Fairview, on to the last left turn and the sprint to the finish just before the Franschhoek Road turn-off.

72 km route continued (783 m of ascent)

At the R 44/Stokery Road robots, the riders turn right then shortly after left onto Lady Loch Road, and after crossing the Berg River they turn right towards the R45 for another right turn towards Malmesbury. After a climb, riders re-join the 123 km route turning left into Voor Paardeberg Road and then left onto the Paardeberg Road through vineyards to a fast downhill section, then a gradual climb to the right turn onto the R44. A further climb takes riders past Windmeul continuing to follow the R 44 before turning left into Suid Agter Paarl Road past Fairview to the last left turn for the sprint to the finish just before the Franschhoek Road turn-off.

46 km route continued (543 m of ascent)

Riders continue straight at R44/Stokery Road robots in Champagne Street and on through the R 44/R45 four-way stop up the R44 where riders then pass the Paardeberg turn-off, rejoining the 123 km and 72 km routes. A further climb takes riders past Windmeul continuing to follow the R44 before turning left into Suid Agter Paarl Road past Fairview to the last left turn and the sprint to the finish just before the Franschhoek Road turn-off.

DIRECTIONS TO VENUE

From CAPE TOWN travel on the N1 to Paarl and take Exit 55, turn left onto Paarl Main Road and after 700m turn right into Pine Street.

From STELLENBOSCH/SOMERSET West travel on the R44 to Klapmuts then turn right onto the N1 and take Exit 55, turn left onto Paarl Main Road and after 700m turn right into Pine Street.

NOTES

The 123 km race will form part of the 2019 Official Premier Seeding Series of the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

No participants u/16 on the long route. No children u/14 on the medium route. Children u/12 will be allowed on the short route and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

It is a fun-ride event aimed at the whole family and will have food and drinks available at the finish venue at De Poort. Various food stalls will offer tasty treats for sale and there will also be a Kidzone to keep the kids busy.
