In My story, My song bits and pieces of different realities within the larger South African context are portrayed through music and text. When our country and its people are scrutinized, they are seen through the eyes of different narrators that vary throughout the production, and even though the view is cast wide, the image that takes shape in song and verse, is not all-encompassing, but consists of snapshots combined in a musical collage. The music of Zoltan Kodaly and Randall Thompson co-exists with traditional folk songs and music from the coloured communities , while Pieter de Villiers’s well-known Boerneef compositions are interchanged with contemporary Afrikaans creations and adaptations by Gerhard Niemand of, among others, music by Christopher Torr and Stef Bos. The variety of musical genres within a single production enhances the idea that coherence and harmony can result from the seemingly disparate and incompatible.

Rose Red is the well-known fairy tale of Snow White twisted on its head by perspective, as told through the eyes of the Evil Queen. This poignant story is cleverly woven together with light-hearted comedy and great popular songs from the likes of Tori Amos, Annie Lennox and Lady Gaga. Vanity, self-esteem, longing to belong, romance, being misunderstood and the darker side of all human beings form the central themes that are explored in this original and enlightening story.

The Gordon Institute of Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) brings the year to a close with the Beautiful Project, to be held at the Cape Town City Hall and on the Hiddingh Campus on 9-10 December.
The Institute continues to push creative and intellectual boundaries through its various interdisciplinary negotiations, with this year-end celebration calling into question our definitions of beauty and ugliness, with specific reference to the African continent. Leading cultural commentator and critic, Sarah Nutall; co-editor of the prize-winning book Ugly/Beautiful: African and Diaspora Aesthetics; will give the keynote address from which the event takes its thematic inspiration.
Nutall is recognised locally and internationally as a prominent voice in the ongoing debates on cultural theory, and particularly for her fresh perspective on the contemporary South African context. Here, she takes a closer look at exoticism in the context of women and race, particularly through the work of Harlem Renaissance performer Josephine Baker, and Johannesburg-based artist Mary Sibande.
Further explorations of notions of ‘aesthetic’ will take place in various forms over the two days. These include performances by dancer-choreographer Nelisiwe Xaba; acclaimed musician Neo Muyanga; fashion, visual and performance artist Athi-Patra Ruga; physical comedian Gaetan Schmid and the UCT Choir.
Theatre director and chef Peter Hayes will be cooking up “The Beautiful Feast” – an eight-course Processional Dinner through the reception rooms of Cape Town’s magnificent City Hall. In putting together what may just be Cape Town’s most talked about event this December, this previous creative director of the Mother City Queer Project predicts “it will be the kind of night you dream about… beyond your wildest dreams…”. This ‘rare’ experience promises a menu of whimsy and surprise, fun and laughter, levity and weight; a night when food, art, dance and theatre entwine and reflect each other’s eccentricities. So count on being led to a room for the main courses, with an expert on architecture sitting at your table and talking about the ‘beautiful building’ or for dessert being led into one of the rooms blindfolded and fed some dreamy sensation while a choir sings softly into one’s ear and so on.
References to Capote’s (in)famous ‘Black and White Ball’ not unfounded, it is suggested that guests dress in a manner befitting the occasion, as Hayes assures that “from canapés to cocktails, dessert to dancing, it’ll be a night to remember!”
The Beautiful Project takes place at the Cape Town City Hall and UCT’s Hiddingh Campus, on 9-10 December 2011. For more information on GIPCA, see the website www.gipca.uct.ac.za, phone the GIPCA office on 021 480 7156, or email fin-gipca@uct.ac.za. Tickets will be available through Computicket.

GIPCA’s final event for the year is The Beautiful Feast, an eight-course processional dinner through the reception rooms of Cape Town's City Hall.
Acclaimed Theatre Director and 'foodie', Peter Hayes, will be both Artistic Director and Chef for The Beautiful Feast, which takes place on 10 December 2011, beginning at 7pm sharp.
Taking his cue from the culinary arts as well as an enveloping political and social climate, the performances will explore some revealing relationships between power and feasting. Ideas around scarcity and plenty, power and food, appetite and wish-fulfillment will be explored through the twinning of extraordinary food and magnificent performances, making The Beautiful Feast both fun and serious. “Violence, you see, is a form of lust, a primitive kind of consumerism: early capitalism you might say” (from The Godfather of Katmandu, by John Burdett).
From cocktails, canapés and ‘amuse bouch’; to dinner accompanied by wine from Spier; to decadent dessert, cheese and coffee; it promises to be everything one would expect from a feast. But with the kitchen for the evening installed in The Ballroom, one can also expect to see this abundance of wild delicious dreams coming to life.
Replete with performance art, theatre and dance; the evening is planned as true feast for all the senses, and in all 5 flavours. Part of The Beautiful Project, the weekend’s events deal with ideas of beauty and ugliness, asking such questions as ‘What is the beautiful sensation?’, ‘What ideas of beauty exist in our South African context?’, and ‘What has been inherited, and what lost?’
Participating artists include Claire Berlein, Guy de Lancy, Fiona Du Plooy, Ntombi Gasa, Nicola Hanekom, Samantha Knight, Nelisiwa Rashualang, Julia Raynham, Gaëtan Schmid, Patrick de Wet, Celia & Nathalie Sidler, Dominique Ripoll-Dausa and the UCT Choir; in a programme featuring such risqué performances as an extract from The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover and Salomé's Dance of the Seven Veils.
The food will relate to the art, dance and theatre, both as commentary and as an integral part of the performances. In this way, the links between food and emotional context will be deepened and explored, and combined with sensations of sound and sight. All the food promises to be extraordinary and delicious: Hayes specialises in beautifully presented, clean tasting, playful food - with a twist…
Participants are encouraged to come with an open mind and hungry belly, and to dress fabulously!
The Beautiful Feast is on 10 December at the City Hall in Darling Street, and begins at 7pm sharp. Tickets cost R80 and are available through Computicket.
The Beautiful Project takes place at UCT’s Hiddingh Campus and the Cape Town City Hall, 9 – 10 December 2011. For the full programme, visit www.gipca.uct.ac.za or contact the GIPCA office on 021 480 7156 / fin-gipca@uct.ac.za. Tickets for Friday 9 December are R40 and available through the GIPCA office. The film screenings on Saturday 10 December are free of charge.
ENDS
Notes to Editors:
“We associate public dinner with conversation and honesty and sharing truth, chewing the fat, in vino veritas. We ring up a good friend and say I’ve got to talk to you, can we meet for dinner? We arrange the important verbal, cerebral moments of our life, ones that can’t be done over the telephone, where eye contact and epidermal contact are absolutely essential, we arrange them in restaurants…”

Maak gereed vir ‘n onderwater see avontuur!

Pinelands Players is proud to present “Honk!” from the 9th to the 17th of December, 2011.
Directed by Kyla Thorburn with musical direction by Justin Wardle, ‘Honk’
promises to be an exciting excursion out for the whole family
Since it first hatched in 1993 Stiles & Drewe’s musical Honk! has winged its
way around the world. A world-wide stage sensation, Honk! has won
multiple awards including the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical.
Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling”, “Honk!” tells the
story of an odd looking young duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mom. The
audience journey with Ugly on a “Wild Goose Chase” from the Duckyard to a
Marshland were we all meet all sorts of delightful characters, including the
devious Cat who wants to eat Ugly for lunch.
The principal theme of the show is clearly the acceptance, compassion and
understanding of others who may appear different for whatever reason. The
main message is that being different is OK, it is something to be welcomed,
embraced and celebrated rather than feared, misunderstood or persecuted.
Honk! is family entertainment that is fun for all ages – as much about people
as it is about ducks.

Nicholas Spagnoletti’s memorable, multi-award winning London Road is returning to the Fugard Theatre from 22 November to 17 December 2011. The production will run in the beautiful Fugard Theatre Studio.
Directed by Lara Bye, starring Robyn Scott and Ntombi Makhutshi, London Road had its opening season at Kalk Bay Theatre in March 2010, and has since had multiple sell-out runs at theatres and festivals around the country. The production won the Golden Standard Bank Ovation Award for Theatre at the National Arts Festival in 2010 and garnered three Fleur du Cap awards in 2011 making a clean sweep of the major award categories; Robyn Scott received the Fleur for Best Performance by an Actress, while Ntombi Makhutshi received the Fleur for Best Supporting Actress. Nicholas Spagnoletti won the Fleur for Best New SA Script for his first scripted play. London Road was also nominated for two Kanna awards in the categories of Best Director and Best Female Artist.
On the surface the two characters, Stella and Rosa Kaplowitz, have nothing in common. Stella is a young Nigerian woman living in a damp, converted storage room. Long distant family, dodgy gangsters and a sense of survival makes her very mistrusting of the gestures of strangers. Rosa is an elderly Jewish widow living in a flat on the fifth floor. Her children and grandchildren live in Australia and Israel so she keeps herself occupied by becoming very involved in the business of her neighborhood. An act of violence brings these two ladies together, and a beautiful friendship results.
With London Road Lara Bye brings her trademark attention to detail, intelligent sophistication, a unique theatre style and staging to the production. Bye’s other recent projects have included The Flying Dutchman at the Suidoosterfees and ‘night, Mother for this year’s Main Programme at the National Arts Festival, again working with London Road designer Craig Leo and lighting designer Faheem Bardien.
Original sound for London Road is by Braam Du Toit.
