Just before midnight on a deserted, foggy stretch of road in southern Wales, Michael Starkwedder runs his car into a ditch and is forced to abandon it. Fortunately, a nearly manor house offers the prospect of assistance and he traverses the ground to the French doors of a ground-floor study. After knocking fails to rouse a response from within, Starkwedder tries the doors. Finding them unlocked, he cautiously lets himself in – and comes face-to-face with an attractive young woman standing over a man’s body.
From here, Agatha Christie’s unexpected guest finds himself embroiled in a claustrophobic atmosphere where everyone has motive, no one is who they really are, and the mischievous plot twists and turns in solving the crime are endless. A true representative of the mystery genre, this devious and surprising play will toy with the audience’s emotions until the very last scene.
