JAK DE PRIESTER & BAND
16 February 2012 - 18 February 2012

HABEAS CORPUS
10 February 2012 - 18 February 2012

Habeas Corpus, is a comedy set in Brighton in the 1960s. Here the lust and longing of the permissive society has well and truly taken hold of the apparently respectable Wicksteed family. With a succession of characters ranging from a rampant doctor and a randy vicar to a frustrated flat-cheasted spinster and a baffled domestic cleaner, this rollicking farce is as saucy and English as a seaside postcard...

18 February 2012

City Bowl Market on Hope is becoming the place where Cape foodies meet. After our tremendously successful Grand Opening we are growing incredible fast. We have spent months scouring the Cape for the most exciting stallholders and products – think bagels, Indian, sushi and croissants, but also fresh produce, bacon-and-egg rolls, ciabata, cheese and everything in between. Housed in an exquisite old building in Gardens with a fascinating history, (Zionist Hall, Jehovah’s Church, Indian Temple) the City Bowl Market on Hope is the place to meet friends and feed the family, while stocking the larder with a range of home-made delicacies. It caters for the whole family with a garden and jungle gym for the kids, draft beer for the dads and lots and lots of irresistible goodies to tempt and torment the fussiest of foodies. The City Bowl Market trades every Saturday between 9am and 2pm. It is situated at 14 Hope St Gardens. Every garden should have a market after all! There is lots of parking available.

KAREN ZOID – ACOUSTIC SHOW
18 February 2012

Karen Zoid has become an important part of the South African music scene. Since releasing her first solo album, Poles Apart (2002), which fired the imagination of both critics and the public, Karen Zoid became an icon in the South- African market, which the press renamed the ‘Zoid Generation’. Zoid has become such an important part of the home grown scene that her name is now the byword for emotionally charged, downright incendiary South African rock music. What's more, through the last decade, Zoid has managed that unusual and frequently tricky feat of balancing popular appeal with critical praise; of securing an audience of both Afrikaans and English speakers; of retaining her individuality in a market known for its desire for sameness. And through it all, Zoid has held onto an enviable integrity that allows her to speak her mind in a way that only earns her more devotees and proved no barrier to being named Best Female Artist at the 2008 South African Music Awards. Zoid's super-charged rock energy is an ability to write gorgeous, delicately rendered songs that speak of the emotional vortex that drives this exceptional artist to keep creating. 'Ultimate Zoid', her latest album shows that Karen Zoid is South Africa's premier female rock artist, full stop. She has shared the staged with international acts like John Mayer, Annie Lennox, Metallica, Simple Plan , Hothouse Flowers, Seal and UB40. Over a career that has last nine years now, Zoid has earned various accolades (including gold album sales) but she says that what continues to drive her is a deep-seated desire to create music that she can get up on stage and play live. "When I was in that all-girl punk band, or busking or when I am playing to a huge crowd , the feeling I get from delivering my music is still the same - and that's why I do this. All the stuff that goes around making an album - the promo, the interviews, making videos, the artwork … that's work. Playing live? That's what I love."

STEF BOS
18 February 2012

Deon Chang sê op ‘n Woolworths poster “it’s a privilege to be different”. (Die Burger; 11 Okt 2004.) Die vertoning is ‘n menslike verhaal met lewensgetroue humoristiese momente wat jou sal laat huil van die lag, net om kort daarna weer ‘n hartseer traan weg te pik. “Oprah Winfrey sê ‘n kind kies sy ouers. As ek alles in die lewe verkeerd gedoen het, het ek ten minste een ding reggedoen en dit was om Ma te kies. Bye Ma, Jaypee.”

During the months of February and March, De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in the quaint little town of Calitzdorp alongside the well known Route 62, will once again offer visitors to the area the opportunity to pick deliciously sweet Hanepoot grapes. This fun-filled picking experience will take place from 8 February to 3 March 2012, and will be made available every day (except Sundays) from 08h00 until 16h00. Grapes cost R4.90/kg and visitors are welcome to bring their own containers. Alternatively containers can be purchased at De Krans at a minimal cost. Picking grapes can lead to visitors working up a hefty appetite, and to cater for this need Vygieshof Home for the Aged will be offering delicious braaivleis meals on Wednesdays and Saturdays, between 11h00 and 14h00. As these meals have proven to be extremely popular in the past, booking is essential. Besides picking their own grapes, a visit to this award-winning cellar also affords visitors the opportunity to sample, at no extra cost, their range of 2011 award-winning wines. One of these being the De Krans Cape Tawny Port, a double gold medal winner at the 2011 Michelangelo International Wine Awards, Champion Private Wine Cellar at the 2011 SA Young Wine Show and more recently received a 5-star rating in the 2012 Platter's South African Wine Guide for the De Krans 2009 Cape Vintage Reserve Port.

GOOD NIGHT
02 February 2012 - 07 March 2012

GOOD NIGHT, A PROVACTIVE ART EXHBITION EXPLORING THE POWER AND FRAGILITY OF WOMEN Established South African artist, Heike Davies, will hold her first solo exhibition since 2005, at the Barnard Gallery from the 2nd of February 2012. The exhibition entitled “Good-Night”, will feature bold figurative mixed media paintings that explore the power of female sexuality. This powerful exhibition of 30 paintings, explores the contradictory perceptions of women as objects of desire, abuse and fear. “The work talks about female sexuality, as one of the most powerful forces, yet it is the very thing that renders women completely vulnerable,” says Davies. The emotive work combines elements from traditional portraiture with something that is more uncomfortable and raw. Her subjects, a pantheon of women, some taken from commercial mass media images, others are women from the sex industry, and some are friends. The differences between them are blurred and merged; it is difficult to tell which are prostitutes, fashion models, friends or porn stars. On the canvases the subjects merge into a nameless, faceless confrontation, they are all portrayed as women in a way that is fragile yet fierce in their strength. The works juxtapose vulnerability and assertion. Many of the subjects shut their eyes in escape from the viewers prying eyes, to evade the questions, judgments, yet somehow they are all very present. Yet, others are painted in a formal frontal perspective and challenge the viewer directly with their very direct confrontational gazes. Yet all somehow manage to present themselves naked before you, vulnerable, defiant and beautiful. This work portrays women in unadulterated honesty, contrasting virtue with a common and underlying primal sense of allure. The over-riding feeling of the works is beauty – and the complexity that surrounds beauty – the blessing and the curse of being female. “Heike’s latest body of work is a both powerful and thought provoking, a must view for those looking to be inspired, “ concludes Chris Barnard, owner of the Barnard Gallery. The exhibition will open on the 2nd of February 2012 and run until of 7th of March 2012. Visit www.barnardgallery.com for more information or email info@barnardgallery.com to receive regular updates about the exhibition. CPOA GOLF DAY
02 February 2012 - 23 March 2012

The Cape Peninsula Organisation for the Aged is hosting a Charity Golf Day at the Rondebosch  Golf Course on Friday 23rd of March 2012 for the benefit of our six sub-economic homes. CPOA as a non-profit Organisation for the aged based in Cape Town, has recognised that the plight of indigent older persons living in South Africa is very real and has faithfully accepted the challenge to care for older persons for the past 57 years through community based services and homes for the frail older person.  At present CPOA houses approx. 500 indigent older persons and renders services to another 2000 community based older persons by means of our senior centres and home help projects. The need to recognise that all older persons have contributed to the development of South Africa, albeit some in small ways, should be a challenge to both the corporate world and communities to offer their support in whichever way possible.  It is also a well-known phenomenon that populations are living longer and are increasingly more dependent on care. Our appeal to you is to support us in making this a memorable day. Please complete the attached Golf Schedule and Help us care to continue to make a difference in the lives of older persons in our care. Although we are fully aware that your company is inundated with requests, we anticipate that you will favourably consider our appeal. Should you be unable to enter a FOURBALL or sponsor a WET HOLE, we will gladly accept and ACKNOWLEDGE any DONATION or PRIZES towards this FUNDRAISING event.  You would, of course, be welcome to send along brochures/flyers for display on the day. Thank you and kind regards. Hubert 079 503 1251
