ANNALE VAN 'N WINDGAT
26 February 2012

Dis ‘n laugh a minute met diepte. Komedie is tweede natuur by hom. Kom lag jou gat af by Die BOER op Sondagmiddag ....(gee besonderhede). Kry intussen ‘n voorsmakie deur solank ons webblad www.windgat.co.za te gaan bekyk. As jou gat jeuk vir iets nuut en slim, dan is Annale van ‘n Windgat net vir jou geskryf.

GLOBAL SPOKES CYCLING EVENT
25 February 2012 - 26 February 2012

Habitat For Humanity Maties has chosen the 12 hour Fun Cycle Challenge as its pilot regarding its fundraising initiatives. As a sustainable initiative, it will not only create awareness about the cause but will also create sustainable relationships within the community. It is through this event that there will be a year- long relationship between the Habitat team and the community in which it works. The goal is to ride as far as you can in a 24 hour period, split over two days! If you want to stop, and even have a few hours sleep, you can. There is no requirement and how far or fast you have to ride, there is simply the mantra that the more we ride, the more people we help! There are two available routes which both depart from the Neelsie Centre in Stellenbosch. The first route is 4km and the second is 7km. The event will take place on the 25th and 26th of February 2012. Cyclists are able to cycle either as individuals or in relay teams. Each cyclist is responsible for finding people or businesses to sponsor them either per kilometre they ride or as a lump sum donation. After the event all sponsors are contacted with the distance that their rider or team rode and how much they have committed to the cause. Payment is made easy for sponsors through the website thus relieving cyclists of handling any money. We encourage all cyclists of any age and any skill level to take part in this fantastic event, which promises to be alot of fun.

SULTANS OF SWING
26 February 2012

For the past three years, multi-talented musician and master guitarist Mel Botes, has tantalized audiences all over the country with his critically acclaimed musical performance, Crazy Diamond: A Tribute to Pink Floyd. Audiences and critics agreed that he mastered the complexity and density of the Floyd in a way that none of the other tribute shows have achieved. He then followed this with David’s Confession: About time, an original composition of his own, featuring various other acclaimed musicians with him. Now, by popular demand, he is presenting the next chapter in this remarkable series of stage productions with the long awaited “Sultans of Swing: A tribute to Dire Straits”. Featuring the same pin point accuracy in his playing, the same acclaimed band and the same delightful Botes touch, this show promises everything audiences have come to expect from the virtuoso. Like in the case of his previous shows, this show features an overview of the complete anthology of the band and its enigmatic front man, Mark Knopfler. The title is derived from their definitive song with the same name, which has of course become a standard in serious guitar playing repertoire. The show premiered on 31 October 2011 and again on 9 November 2011 to packed audiences in Pretoria. A promotional tour will now be undertaken in December 2011 at various venues along the picturesque Western and Eastern Cape coastlines. The well known Dire Straits songs include “Money for nothing”; “Walk of life”; “Calling Elvis”; “Telegraph Road”; “Private investigations”; “Romeo and Juliet”; “Lady writer”; “Tunnel of love” and the hauntingly beautiful “Brothers in arms”. This list of box office hits is augmented by a selection of other stunning Dire Straits songs that include the popular “What it is”; “Your latest trick”; “Local hero(Coming home) ”; “The man’s too strong”; “Heavy fuel” and “Fade to black”. Add to this some of Knopfler’s best solo tunes including “Sailing to Philadelphia”; “Darling pretty”; “Trawlerman’s song”; “Silvertown blues”; “Sands of Nevada” and “Back to Tupelo”. The show follows the careers of Knopfler and the band and portrays it in an original and entertaining way to the backdrop of visual material and the spectacular use of lights on stage. The now familiar band consists of the same accomplished group of musicians that played in “Crazy Diamond: A tribute to Pink Floyd”. They are MD Greyling (who is also an accomplished solo artist) on backing vocals, rhythm guitar and keyboard; Simon Orange (who is also a member of the “Blues Broers”; “The Simon Orange trio” and a member of Singer Valiant Swart’s band) on backing vocals and keyboard; Barry Steenkamp (who is a member of the “Radio Kalahari Orkes”) on bass; and Theuns Botha (a respected session player) on drums. The show is produced by Botes himself, and Mellet Moll, a familiar collaborator on various Botes projects.

GOOD NIGHT
02 February 2012 - 07 March 2012

GOOD NIGHT, A PROVACTIVE ART EXHBITION EXPLORING THE POWER AND FRAGILITY OF WOMEN Established South African artist, Heike Davies, will hold her first solo exhibition since 2005, at the Barnard Gallery from the 2nd of February 2012. The exhibition entitled “Good-Night”, will feature bold figurative mixed media paintings that explore the power of female sexuality. This powerful exhibition of 30 paintings, explores the contradictory perceptions of women as objects of desire, abuse and fear. “The work talks about female sexuality, as one of the most powerful forces, yet it is the very thing that renders women completely vulnerable,” says Davies. The emotive work combines elements from traditional portraiture with something that is more uncomfortable and raw. Her subjects, a pantheon of women, some taken from commercial mass media images, others are women from the sex industry, and some are friends. The differences between them are blurred and merged; it is difficult to tell which are prostitutes, fashion models, friends or porn stars. On the canvases the subjects merge into a nameless, faceless confrontation, they are all portrayed as women in a way that is fragile yet fierce in their strength. The works juxtapose vulnerability and assertion. Many of the subjects shut their eyes in escape from the viewers prying eyes, to evade the questions, judgments, yet somehow they are all very present. Yet, others are painted in a formal frontal perspective and challenge the viewer directly with their very direct confrontational gazes. Yet all somehow manage to present themselves naked before you, vulnerable, defiant and beautiful. This work portrays women in unadulterated honesty, contrasting virtue with a common and underlying primal sense of allure. The over-riding feeling of the works is beauty – and the complexity that surrounds beauty – the blessing and the curse of being female. “Heike’s latest body of work is a both powerful and thought provoking, a must view for those looking to be inspired, “ concludes Chris Barnard, owner of the Barnard Gallery. The exhibition will open on the 2nd of February 2012 and run until of 7th of March 2012. Visit www.barnardgallery.com for more information or email info@barnardgallery.com to receive regular updates about the exhibition. About the Artist: Davies, was born in 1976, has a BA degree in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2000. During her studies she was awarded the Maciver Scholarship (1999 and 2000) and was placed on the Dean’s Merit List (1999 and 2000. DID WE DANCE: UKUTSHONA KO MENDI (THE SINKING OF T
23 February 2012 - 10 March 2012

The story of the sinking of the SS Mendi - one of the worst marine disasters in history - hits the Baxter in February for a short season. One of the greatest tragedies in the history of the South African military will be vividly brought to life when Did We Dance: Ukutshona ko Mendi (The Sinking of the Mendi) hits the Baxter Golden Arrow Studio from 23 February to 10 March at 7pm nightly with matinées on 25 February and 10 March at 2pm. A formidable creative team and eight-member cast has been assembled to tell the epic story of South African soldiers trapped on the SS Mendi as it fatefully sank in British waters during World War I in 1917. The script is based on the book Black Valour by Norman Clothier. Narrated through African elements, sounds and movements, Did We Dance: Ukutshona ko Mendi, is written by Lara Foot, directed by Mandla Mbothwe and developed by the company, and features Warona Seane, Bongo Nkani, Owen Manamela-Mogane, Thando Doni, Apollo Ntshoko, Bongile Mantsai, Mongezi Ncwadi and Xolani Ngesi. The production sails into Cape Town following a highly successful premiere in King William’s Town in October last year. It brings together a hugely talented team and group of performers from across South Africa to create moments from our history that speak of the bravery of these men nearly a century ago.

Six of the Best A Tribute to Freddie Mercury, Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel, Cher & Pink The Barnyard Theatre Productions presents a tribute to surpass all tributes, as we celebrate the music of the 6 greatest pop icons of all time. Imagine a concert featuring Freddie Mercury, Bon Jovi, Meat Loaf, Billy Joel, Pink and Cher all on one stage in one show singing number one hits from the last four decades of pop music. These artists have dominated the charts to such a degree and made such an impact on the music industry that it is essential to stage a special tribute! The show features an 11- piece cast who make their way through a repertoire that was made in Rock and Roll Heaven. Just imagine Meat Loaf challenging the vocal ability of Freddie who in turn has to compete with Bon Jovi! Then we have the power and beauty of Pink, and the soulfulness of Billy, and of course let’s not forget the flamboyance and decadence of Cher! Six of the Best is about showmanship and charisma and the music all comes together in one big concert that will simply blow your mind!

How real is real? My work triggers sufficient interest I hope in what it ‘is’ ie what’s in front of them and might hopefully persuade people to ask what it means or stands for' ....Storm Thorgerson

CPOA GOLF DAY
02 February 2012 - 23 March 2012

The Cape Peninsula Organisation for the Aged is hosting a Charity Golf Day at the Rondebosch  Golf Course on Friday 23rd of March 2012 for the benefit of our six sub-economic homes. CPOA as a non-profit Organisation for the aged based in Cape Town, has recognised that the plight of indigent older persons living in South Africa is very real and has faithfully accepted the challenge to care for older persons for the past 57 years through community based services and homes for the frail older person.  At present CPOA houses approx. 500 indigent older persons and renders services to another 2000 community based older persons by means of our senior centres and home help projects. The need to recognise that all older persons have contributed to the development of South Africa, albeit some in small ways, should be a challenge to both the corporate world and communities to offer their support in whichever way possible.  It is also a well-known phenomenon that populations are living longer and are increasingly more dependent on care. Our appeal to you is to support us in making this a memorable day. Please complete the attached Golf Schedule and Help us care to continue to make a difference in the lives of older persons in our care. Although we are fully aware that your company is inundated with requests, we anticipate that you will favourably consider our appeal. Should you be unable to enter a FOURBALL or sponsor a WET HOLE, we will gladly accept and ACKNOWLEDGE any DONATION or PRIZES towards this FUNDRAISING event.  You would, of course, be welcome to send along brochures/flyers for display on the day. Thank you and kind regards. Hubert 079 503 1251
