‘n Ruk na Ma Grieta op die wit laken gaan lê het, haar siel aan God gegee het en die res van haar “aan mense wat dit nodig het”, het Jaypee in 2002 begin om elke jaar ‘n brief aan sy Ma op haar verjaarsdag in Die Burger se doodsberigte te plaas:
“Vandag is Ma 95. Dankie, Ma, dat Ma my grootgemaak het of ek heeltemal normaal is en nooit “odd” laat voel het nie. Deon Chang sê op ‘n Woolworths poster “it’s a privilege to be different”. (Die Burger; 11 Okt 2004.)
Die vertoning is ‘n menslike verhaal met lewensgetroue humoristiese momente wat jou sal laat huil van die lag, net om kort daarna weer ‘n hartseer traan weg te pik. “Oprah Winfrey sê ‘n kind kies sy ouers. As ek alles in die lewe verkeerd gedoen het, het ek ten minste een ding reggedoen en dit was om Ma te kies. Bye Ma, Jaypee.”

“It’s a wonderful word” says Albert Jack and he should know!
Join best- selling British author Albert Jack at the Bay Bookshop in the Cape Quarter on Thursday 19th April when he chats about his successful non-fiction writing career.
With his latest book, “It’s a wonderful word” now available in South Africa Albert Jack has enjoyed seeing his 11 non-fiction books reach best seller status with more than 20 months on the UK Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller Lists between them, so he knows a thing or two about writing.
As a writer and historian Albert Jack has taken the unusual route of uncovering the idiosyncrasies of the stories behind the words, the truth behind the world’s greatest stories, nursery rhymes and unusual words and phrases. Given his extraordinary success he seems to have found many of the secrets to producing popular non-fiction books that grab the imagination and take the reader on a humorous journey of discovery
Now resident in Cape Town, Albert is offering a new series of workshops to would- be authors. The eight week courses (one evening a week) will be held at Cape Town Central Library, Kenilworth and Johannesburg from mid April through to mid June. The workshops explore the skills and techniques that could see your manuscript getting positive attention.www.albertjack.com/workshops

Be sure not to miss conceptual wildlife artist John Moore's current show at the SA Print Gallery. These particular works have never been exhibited in Cape Town before. On show are a selection of John Moore's woodcuts, etchings and lithographs.
John's exceptionally detailed and realistic works are depictions of wildlife and the poignant plight of endangered species. This is at a time when there is urgent need to change our attitude to the environment and nature, which John feels passionate about. His style contains elements of surrealism and traditional naturalism which merge into thoughtful reflections of our age. John believes his work assists the viewer to find their own interpretation and allows the work to speak to them personally. The imagery often includes references to the Khoi-San - which he believes are the ‘first people' of the Southern African continent. This evocative body of work is where the human and the spirit world meet. To read more and see more of John Moore's work http://printgallery.co.za/

LINE, a one-act comedy by Israel Horovitz, is the longest-running play in New York, now brought to Cape Town for the very first time by Sugar-daddy Theatre Co. Running from the 18th to the 28th of April 2012 at the Little Theatre, Orange Street; Age restriction 2-18; tickets are R80 for adults, R60 for students and pensioners, and are available through Computicket.
This absurdist-style play centres on five people waiting in a queue, none of them seemingly know what they are waiting for, but all are desperate to get first place in line. The drama unravels as they squabble, trick, fight, and betray each other to get ahead. It is a character-driven play making a profound statement about society and human behaviour.
‘Stephen’, played by Bjorn Steinbach, is the flamboyant ‘wanna-be’ genius who always seems to get first in line. Leon Clingman, who at one time directed LINE in New York, plays ‘Flemming’, a dim-witted baseball fan. Marlisa Doubell portrays ‘Molly’, a woman who uses her sexuality to get ahead, while Gavin Werner plays her tormented husband, ‘Arnall’. The shady ‘Dolan’ is played by Aidan Whytock. Award-winning director Yvonne Copley heads the team.
Written by the acclaimed Jewish-American playwright of over 70 plays, many of which have been translated and performed worldwide, Israel Horovitz’s LINE is currently in its record-breaking 38th year at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre in New York, and it has been staged in over 25 countries and translated into over 35 languages.

DANCING IN THE STREET
Party all over the world
Dancing in the Street is the one and only Barnyard Show that will give you the opportunity to party all over the world at various famous carnivals, celebrations and festivals. We will criss-cross the globe and visit exotic destinations like the Rio Carnival, the Mardi Gras Carnival in New Orleans, The Cape Minstrel Carnival in Cape Town, St Patrick’s Day in Ireland, The Halloween Festival, The Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa and a New Year’s Eve celebration at Times Square - New York.
The celebration starts with the sound of New Orleans and the Mardi Gras Festival with tributes to Louis Armstrong and Elvis Presley and quickly moves to Brazil with the sounds of Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin and Carlos Santana. This show has no boundaries and also includes the glorious sounds of Ireland’s celebration of St Patrick’s Day with songs like Danny Boy, The Wild Rover and The Leaving of Liverpool. The journey continues to Sydney Australia to the Mardi Gras Pink Festival where the disco tunes of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, take to the air with songs like It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive and I Love the Night Life. We then experience the scary celebrations of Halloween with Michael Jackson’s Thriller and of course Monster Mash and The Time Warp! The party continues in Jamaica with The Sun Splash Festival and the reggae sounds of Bob Marley’s Stir it up, Could you be loved and the beautiful Redemption Song.
Then it’s time to touch down on our own home soil with our own South African celebrations that are not only historical but also have groove and soul! We celebrate The Cape Town Minstrel Carnival that has been brewed for more than three centuries in District Six and is sure to get the party going. The music never stops and is one endless party as we head for the Soccer World Cup 2010 with the anthem Wavin’ Flag bringing the show to a frenzy!
Just when you thought it could not get better we head for new year’s eve at Times Square New York where the audience will link arms and sway to Auld Lang Syn.
There will be dancing, singing and music swinging at the Cresta Barnyard Theatre this summer. We’re calling out around the world, are you ready for Dancing in the Street? Well get down to the Cresta Barnyard Theatre for this year’s biggest Party!

A comic look at what happens behind the theatre curtain from the perspective of one of the forgotten characters of theatre, the curtain puller. Pushed front and centre by a co-incidence of occurrences, he reveals what the audience doesn't see, and at the same time, some of his lost dreams and ambitions in the world of theatre. In this exhibition van Schalkwyk plays with ‘Painting’s’ relationship to the ‘Documentary’ in order to engage a world ‘freeze-framed’ in time. Through his painterly investigation of the everyday life of an isolated community, van Schalkwyk captures the passage of time and its navigation of the temporal to the eternal.
The work draws from a five year period of observation, of the Jatniël
Faith home community where he spent his childhood. Documenting the everyday activities and rituals; traditions and values; the environment and the effect time has on this community of people, he elevates the mundane to create a metaphor for life as a spiritual activity, highlighting their value system of putting God and community ahead of the individual.

Your pet could be just what the judges are looking for in the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year online pet photo competition, which runs from 10 April to 21 May 2012 and aims to help hundreds of homeless pets by finding the most-loved and adored cat and dog online.
An adaptation of the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA’s popular Mutt of the Year competition, which was held annually for 15 years, the new online competition makes it possible for many more dogs to stand a chance of winning the coveted Mutt of the Year title and for the first time gives cat-lovers an opportunity to brag about their feline friends in the new Meow of the Year category.
Unlike traditional pet competitions which reward dogs and cats with fancy pedigrees and pure-bred characteristics, the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year will celebrate the unconditional love and special companionship between pet owners and their canine and feline friends, regardless of their breed. The competition also aims to help hundreds of stray and abandoned animals not as fortunate as those being entered for the titles of Mutt & Meow of the Year, by encouraging pet owners to get their friends and family to vote and donate online to the CoGH SPCA.
The four competition prize categories include the Mutt of the Year and Meow of the Year, which is open to all cats and dogs and the Mutt Top Fundraiser and Meow Top Fundraiser, which will be awarded to the pet and owner who through their votes raises the most amount of money for the CoGH SPCA.
