In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s. Colourful costumes, stunning sets and fabulous singing and dancing make this a must see event!!

Set in Baltimore in the early 1960s, HAIRSPRAY tells the story of a plus-sized girl Tracy who with her positive attitude attempts to break down personal barriers and bring about integration in a divided community. The show contains well-known numbers such as Good Morning Baltimore, Miss Baltimore Crabs, I can Hear the Bells, Welcome to the Sixties and many other vibrant songs. A talented cast of 48 learners have been rehearsing hard to bring you a production that is fun and polished. Don’t forget, many of these cast members were in the winning Grand West team from last year! With colourful dance numbers, an exciting plot and fabulous characters, this is a show not to be missed. We are also using a brand new concept of incorporating live performance with on screen animation – a first for theatre at high school level which has been done all by the MHS students!
