DANCERS LOVE DOGS
16 May 2012

Dancers Love Dogs is a once-off performance taking place at the Artscape Theatre on Wednesday 16 May 2012 in aid of the sterilsation of dogs in several Western Cape townships. Brigitte Reeve Taylor, a Capetonian dance teacher and choreographer, is the driving force behind Dancers Love Dogs. She has been teaching dance for 31 years and has been in theatre since she was a little girl. After dance, her second passion is animals and their well being, hence the idea to create an event combining her theatre experience with her desire to make a difference in the lives of abused and needy dogs. Vet Duncan Siegfried from Hillside Vets clinic and the many different organisations and individuals that are selflessly helping animals in need on a daily basis have done much to inspire Brigitte and motivate her to pursue her desire to be involved in making a difference in the lives of the four-legged creatures that cannot speak for themselves. Through her appeals, several dance companies and studios in Cape Town will be participating in Dancers Love Dogs, generously performing without charge and the venue has been offered by Artscape at a reduced rate. Deon Lotz will MC the dynamic show that will include performances by artists from the Ubuntu B-Boys, Cape Town City Ballet, Cape Junior Ballet, Interdance and the Hip Hop Collective, and from studios such as Karen Ayrton, Debbie McFadden and the Brigitte Reeve Dance Connection with Zola Shuman. Special guests include Dancing With Dogs Cape Town, a quartet of four women who perform with their dogs, all of which have been rescued and nurtured back to wholeness by their trainers. The show starts at 8:15pm and tickets cost R250 each via Computicket or 0214217695 with proceeds going towards the costs of sterilising township dogs. A lucky draw of wonderful prizes donated by several generous sponsors will take place at the event. Brigitte is delighted to announce that Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria will be setting up their own Dancers Love Dogs show. Anyone wishing to make a donation towards this worthy cause may contact Brigitte directly on m2m@mweb.co.za or via Facebook.

JUST A MATTER OF TIME - BY JACO VAN SCHALKWYK
18 April 2012 - 17 May 2012

In this exhibition van Schalkwyk plays with ‘Painting’s’ relationship to the ‘Documentary’ in order to engage a world ‘freeze-framed’ in time. Through his painterly investigation of the everyday life of an isolated community, van Schalkwyk captures the passage of time and its navigation of the temporal to the eternal. The work draws from a five year period of observation, of the Jatniël Faith home community where he spent his childhood. Documenting the everyday activities and rituals; traditions and values; the environment and the effect time has on this community of people, he elevates the mundane to create a metaphor for life as a spiritual activity, highlighting their value system of putting God and community ahead of the individual.

ONLINE SEARCH BEGINS FOR MOST-LOVED MUTT AND MEOW
10 April 2012 - 21 May 2012

Your pet could be just what the judges are looking for in the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year online pet photo competition, which runs from 10 April to 21 May 2012 and aims to help hundreds of homeless pets by finding the most-loved and adored cat and dog online. An adaptation of the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA’s popular Mutt of the Year competition, which was held annually for 15 years, the new online competition makes it possible for many more dogs to stand a chance of winning the coveted Mutt of the Year title and for the first time gives cat-lovers an opportunity to brag about their feline friends in the new Meow of the Year category. Unlike traditional pet competitions which reward dogs and cats with fancy pedigrees and pure-bred characteristics, the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year will celebrate the unconditional love and special companionship between pet owners and their canine and feline friends, regardless of their breed. The competition also aims to help hundreds of stray and abandoned animals not as fortunate as those being entered for the titles of Mutt & Meow of the Year, by encouraging pet owners to get their friends and family to vote and donate online to the CoGH SPCA. The four competition prize categories include the Mutt of the Year and Meow of the Year, which is open to all cats and dogs and the Mutt Top Fundraiser and Meow Top Fundraiser, which will be awarded to the pet and owner who through their votes raises the most amount of money for the CoGH SPCA.
