The vast majority of South African children are eager to learn, but have minimal access to books that are exciting, engaging and relevant to their lives. The encouragement of a love for reading amongst the youth has been one of the main aims of the Franschhoek Literary Festival since its inception, and one of the reasons why the FLF will host a Book Week for Young Readers from 7to 11May, the week leading up to FLF 2012.

Come join this fabulous cast of talented high school kids as they sing, dance and act there way through this wonderful story that is Hairspray. Many of you will know the smash hit movie of the same name and be familiar with this toe-tapping romp which presents a life-affirming message that it’s okay to be different and that progress occurs when we stand together. Set in Baltimore in the early 1960s, HAIRSPRAY tells the story of a plus-sized girl Tracy who with her positive attitude attempts to break down personal barriers and bring about integration in a divided community. The show contains well-known numbers such as Good Morning Baltimore, Miss Baltimore Crabs, I can Hear the Bells, Welcome to the Sixties and many other vibrant songs.
A talented cast of 48 learners have been rehearsing hard to bring you a production that is fun and polished. Don’t forget, many of these cast members were in the winning Grand West team from last year! With colourful dance numbers, an exciting plot and fabulous characters, this is a show not to be missed. We are also using a brand new concept of incorporating live performance with on screen animation – a first for theatre at high school level which has been done all by the MHS students!

Milnerton High School is proud to present the well known musical, Hairspray! Some songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.
Colourful costumes, stunning sets and fabulous singing and dancing make this a must see event!!

In this exhibition van Schalkwyk plays with ‘Painting’s’ relationship to the ‘Documentary’ in order to engage a world ‘freeze-framed’ in time. Through his painterly investigation of the everyday life of an isolated community, van Schalkwyk captures the passage of time and its navigation of the temporal to the eternal.
The work draws from a five year period of observation, of the Jatniël
Faith home community where he spent his childhood. Documenting the everyday activities and rituals; traditions and values; the environment and the effect time has on this community of people, he elevates the mundane to create a metaphor for life as a spiritual activity, highlighting their value system of putting God and community ahead of the individual.

Your pet could be just what the judges are looking for in the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year online pet photo competition, which runs from 10 April to 21 May 2012 and aims to help hundreds of homeless pets by finding the most-loved and adored cat and dog online.
An adaptation of the Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA’s popular Mutt of the Year competition, which was held annually for 15 years, the new online competition makes it possible for many more dogs to stand a chance of winning the coveted Mutt of the Year title and for the first time gives cat-lovers an opportunity to brag about their feline friends in the new Meow of the Year category.
Unlike traditional pet competitions which reward dogs and cats with fancy pedigrees and pure-bred characteristics, the SPCA Royal Canin Mutt & Meow of the Year will celebrate the unconditional love and special companionship between pet owners and their canine and feline friends, regardless of their breed. The competition also aims to help hundreds of stray and abandoned animals not as fortunate as those being entered for the titles of Mutt & Meow of the Year, by encouraging pet owners to get their friends and family to vote and donate online to the CoGH SPCA.
The four competition prize categories include the Mutt of the Year and Meow of the Year, which is open to all cats and dogs and the Mutt Top Fundraiser and Meow Top Fundraiser, which will be awarded to the pet and owner who through their votes raises the most amount of money for the CoGH SPCA.

When Ferris agrees to look after his sister's seedy hotel in the country, he doesn't anticipate the arrival of a notorious journalist who writes a critical column in a Sunday newspaper.
Or that this will coincide with a visit to the hotel of an assortment of guests whose guilty secrets they don't wish to have divulged. As a result, Ferris is caught up in a dizzy round of lies and subterfuge as he tries to protect the hotel's reputation - a task made more difficult by the fact that he doesn't know which of his guests is the journalist!
