How robotic surgery is being used to cure prostate cancer

31 March 2016 11:39 AM
Learn about a groundbreaking procedure from the Cape giving prostate cancer sufferers renewed hope.

A 60 year old man, who had just recently got married, was diagnosed with cancer, but he took a decision to undergo robotic surgery, which ensured he has no impotency side effects after having his prostate gland removed– as is often the case with the old school methods.

Robotic surgery is being used to cure diseases like prostate cancer and it offers several advantages over the traditional surgical method of treating prostate cancer.

According to Dr. Anesh Naidoo, urologist at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, about 20% to 40% of men between the ages of 50 and 60 have prostate cancer. Dr Naidoo says almost 80% of those need treatment, but most patients feel nervous, anxious and uncomfortable about having their prostate removed.

Dr. Naidoo says the traditional treatment for cancer is surgery and the traditional method of surgery is organ surgery, but there are complications associated with it, such as too much blood loss and pain is experienced by patients. However, the robotic surgery on the other side has better results because patients recover faster and experience less trauma.

Click below as Barbara Friedman takes you through this remarkable groundbreaking procedure that gives men hope that prostate cancer does not have to have a negative outcome on their lives.
