Mokonyane: WC should have been declared disaster zone much sooner

The Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says the Western Cape government may have waited too long to declare the province a disaster area.

She thinks that the province should have declared the Western Cape a disaster zone much sooner.

Mokonyane visited the Theewaterskloof Dam on Thursday morning to assess the extent of the water crisis, reports EWN's Ilze-Mari le Roux.

The dam is just 14% full and only 4% of that water is usable.

When you stand there, the magnitude of the crisis really hits you in the eyes.

Provincial government declared the Western Cape a disaster area last week.

Mokonyane says it is now important to implement long-term measures to tackle the Western Cape’s water crisis, Le Roux explains.

The minister mentioned that desalination plants and the effective use of grey water are among the possible long term solutions.
