Millions to be spent on drought ridden areas in the Western Cape

Four Western Cape municipalities are at high risk of running out of water.

Colin Deiner, provincial disaster management chief, has told Times Live that R200-million is being spent in Beaufort West, Kannaland (Ladismith), Knysna and Bitou for emergency work.

Further interventions were being implemented in "medium-risk" municipalities.

It is quite a vast area that we are covering at the moment, a number of them I must say are agricultural drought areas...the others are what we call hydrological drought which is obviously the problem with lack of water.

There are three areas which is, Ooudtshoorn, Hessequa and Kannaland that are both agricultural and hydrological.

Most of the work that we are doing is ground water exploration... we looking to ensure that everybody has water up until next winter.
