City of Cape Town announces Level 5 water restrictions

On Sunday morning the City instituted Level 5 water restrictions bringing new measures into immediate effect to drive water consumption down to 500 million litres a day.

The City says it intends to further increase pressure management.

As the Cape moves towards the end of its winter rainy season, the water levels in the province's dams remain critical, with storage levels at 34.2% - an effective amount of 14.2%.

In the statement released the City states that while the 87 litres per person and the overall target of 500 million litres per day of collective consumptions remain in place, it is placing emphasis on capping excessive water use at the domestic household level and placing additional restrictions on the commercial sector.

Domestic use is now capped at 20kl per month. Any usage over this limit will be subject to a possible fine of between R5000 to R10 000. The City has said the fines will be confirmed shortly.
