Beaufort West has reached its Day Zero

Beaufort West Municipal Manager, Kosie Haarhof has confirmed that the dams are currently empty as the town continues to face a severe drought.

He says they are relying entirely on 32 boreholes that are supplying the town with water.

We are praying for rain and hoping to get some rain in the next couple of days.

Our plan B, in case our boreholes run out of water, will be to provide tankers to make sure that our residents have access to water.

Although the dams are empty, Haarhof says the boreholes are still supplying enough water for the town even though they might run empty at any time.

He says for the long term solution they have set up a task team to look into a connection to the Gariep Dam.

Although it will cost them a lot, its a project worth investing in, says Haarhof.

If we could get connected to the Gariep Dam in Colesberg that will help us for the next couple of years to ensure that Beaufort West has enough water.

On the other hand Cape Town dams are at a critical level as well. It is estimated that the current water will sustain Capetonians until March next year.

An aerial photo of the Theewaterskloof Dam taken by Linden Birns paints a very scary picture considering that the rainy season has come and gone without sufficient rain.

Day Zero is fast approaching for Cape Town.
