Water Files: 'We MUST protect our natural water resources' - WWF

Ahead of World Water Day on Wednesday, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says it's important to be aware of the state of our natural water resources.

Freshwater Programme Manger Christine Colvin says many people don't undertand where water that comes from the taps originates from.

She says greater awareness is needed when it comes to 'water catchment areas' - these are sources from which we get fresh water.

Colvin says natural water resources are often polluted, over-exploited and suffer through a lack of active management.

One of the biggest threats out there is from alien invasive plants, the Gum trees, which use up twice as much water as our natural indigenous plants. It is difficult to get them out and keep our catchments healthy.
