Over 200 million litres of water saved through #SmartWaterMeterChallenge

It's almost a year since the launch of Smart Water Meter Challenge.

CapeTalk teamed up with Stellenbosch University and Shoprite Group to get the Smart Water Meters installed in schools around the Western Cape.

The campaign has had a great deal of success.

Over 340 schools have now had the Dropula device installed and over 200 million litres of water has been saved.

This is according to Professor Thinus Booysen, Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University.

Booysen says they still have about 16 schools to go till the end of the project.

We have now expanded into providing solar at the schools.

Professor Thinus Booysen, Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University

We are trying to leverage the contacts that we have made at the schools to understand the school's system and to help them with the bills.

Professor Thinus Booysen, Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University

We are helping by putting them on solar so that they can firstly save on electricity bills and reduce their carbon footprint. The schools have a carbon footprint of 500KG of CO2 per day.
