State Capture Inquiry

Hawks arrests Bosasa heavyweights. Is this the start of a wave of prosecutions?

…there will be prosecutions and some people will end up in jail and go and wear orange overalls… I can give you the clear assurance we will act on their [commissions of inquiry] recommendations. The criminal justice system will go into action…

President Cyril Ramaphosa (5 February 2019)

Former Bosasa execs Angelo Agrizzi and Andries van Tonder as well as former Correctional Services Commissioner Linda Mti are among seven people the Hawks arrested on Wednesday (6 February).

The arrests are on allegations of corruption, money laundering and fraud related to the state capture inquiry.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Steven Powell, Director in Forensics at ENS Africa.

Is this a new page for prosecutions?

Are the wheels of justice finally turning?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for quotes from it).

It’s not just a change of temperature. This is climate change! What we’re seeing is the political will to address rampant corruption… a climate in which enforcement is going to flourish.

Steven Powell, Director in Forensics - ENS Africa

This is the start of many big things… The public has been crying out for action… Our President has issued a commitment to eradicating corruption…

Steven Powell, Director in Forensics - ENS Africa

I anticipate a rapidly unfolding process [of bringing corrupt people to book]…

Steven Powell, Director in Forensics - ENS Africa

The NPA has lost credibility… I think they’ll be keen to prove they are committed and making a difference in this fight against corruption.
