I was a teacher for a whole term… I had less time than I ever had… It [being a financial advisor] appealed to me. There was no boss breathing behind my neck… I made money and learned a lot… It set me up very well, financially…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

I’ve never really been one for things… The most excessive thing I ever did was to finance a BMW, to my regret…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

I was raised by my gran… She raised me and my sister... a single woman… there wasn’t a lot of money… I had to get part-time jobs to pay for university…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

Every week The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews a famous person about her or his attitude to money (hopes and fears, successes and failures, etc.) as part of his weekly “Make Money Mondays, Personal Edition” feature.

This week Whitfield interviewed musician Kahn (his real name is 'Dingaan') Morbee.

Morbee is probably best known as lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the indie rock band “The Parlotones” which he formed in 1998.

The Parlotones have released eight studio albums.

It is one of South Africa’s top-selling bands of all time and has won nine South African Music Awards.

Morbee is also a solo artist, performing under the name “KAHN” since 2014.

  • But what is it that he believes about money?

  • Does it keep him up at night?

  • Does he spend like crazy or save compulsively?

  • How did his childhood experiences shape his views on money?

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for more quotes from it).

My mom is South African… she eloped to Belgium. When I was two we moved back to South Africa…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

I still think the industry [financial advice] is pretty dodge… They sell you a dream… and they’re not very transparent…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

I’m not impulsive…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

I invest in older guitars… I can’t play on a share, but I can play my guitar… I have about 30… At some stage, I’ve played them all…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

The music industry is very complicated…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

The music scene in this country has always been in a lull… We’ve always been hustlers…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

We have consistent support in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK… We still have a fan-base in the US…

Kahn Morbee, The Parlotones

No. [When asked if he makes money with streaming]
