Robots made in our image are requiring less and less human intervention to learn

16 April 2019 8:11 PM
The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews Jared Molko, a former employee at Google.

Artificially intelligent programs are requiring less and less human intervention in order for them to learn. And less and less data, in fact… There’s a new technique called ‘reinforcement learning’ which requires an AI to learn on its own without any training data whatsoever… We don’t know how various AIs are coming to conclusions…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

Machine learning… an AI is given a lot of data… and a goal… then through a process of trial and error, the AI starts to learn… As a child figures things out… so too machines figure things out through reward and punishment…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

The term “artificial intelligence” (AI) refers to machines that mimic the cognitive functions of human brains such as learning and problem-solving.

State-of-the-art machines with capabilities classified as AI can do things such as understand human speech, compete at the highest level in strategic games such as chess and Go, drive cars, diagnose disease and create art.

AI is widely used by search engines such as Google, online assistants such as Siri; it's used in image recognition, spam filtering and targeting of online advertisements.

Some people such as Elon Musk consider AI an existential threat to humanity if it progresses unabated.

Others fear mass-unemployment.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Jared Molko, a former employee at Google.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for more quotes from it).

‘Narrow intelligence’ has been around for a couple of decades… ‘General intelligence’ is generally the stuff we see in sci-fi movies…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

There are more possible moves you can make on a Go board than there are stars in the galaxy… It’s a new level of intelligence… Google beat these champions…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

There’s an arms race between the US and China in terms of AI…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

Military advances… superhuman robots; I don’t think anyone really wants that…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google

Cyberwarfare is a real threat… [But] I don’t see a cataclysmic dystopian future where one AI rules us all…

Jared Molko, former employee at Google
