Who can ever forget the image of Wendy Hayes in a 12metre colourful South Africa and football designed skirt walking along the Fan Walk ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches at the Cape Town Stadium in June and July this year? Accompanied by her 18 year-old son James Dean on stilts, she became the focus of many a photograph of soccer fans who were making their way to the stadium.

Wendy is a single Mother who does what she can to make ends meet. Her eldest son, Billy-Dean, is autistic, a keen swimmer and absolutely loves ice cream. James Dean is in Grade 12, has a passion and a talent for cooking and wants to be a game ranger one day.

Wendy’s passion is creating something out of absolutely nothing. The skirt is in the colours of the South African flag, has the word ‘welcome’ in all the languages of the world and has footballs everywhere. All of this from recycled material.

567 CapeTalk and the Dischem Foundation gave Wendy a multi function over-locking sewing machine as well as vouchers to Fabric City in order for her to continue creating extraordinary garments. That way, she will be able to take care of her incredibly talented teenage boys.
