GREAT TEXT/BIG QUESTIONS ROSELEE GOLDBERG
11 March 2010

RoseLee Goldberg, a world authority on performance art, will be guest speaker at GIPCA’s Great Texts / Big Questions lecture on 11 March. She will be discussing how she came to write the seminal Performance Art from Futurism to the Present. The South African-born RoseLee Goldberg is a world authority on performance art and is being proudly hosted by the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA). Goldberg’s illustrious career – as art historian, critic, curator and author – has spanned almost three decades and has helped shape the public’s view of live performance as a visual art form. Her book Performance Art from Futurism to the Present was first published in 1979 and pioneered the study of performance art; even today it is considered a definitive text on the topic. Career highlights include directorship of the Royal College of Art Gallery, London and curator of exhibitions at The Kitchen, New York, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the Guggenheim. A graduate of Wits University and the Courtauld Institute of Art (London University), Goldberg has taught at New York University since 1987 and lectured extensively - at Yale, Princeton and Tate Modern among others. Born and bred in Durban, Goldberg has lived and worked predominantly in the USA, and is currently visiting South Africa as a judge for Spier Contemporary. This free hour-long lecture is not to be missed.

FREE DARWIN LECTURE
11 March 2010

THE HUMAN JOURNEY OUT OF AFRICA: A PERSPECTIVE FROM LANGUAGE STUDIES DARWIN LECTURE Professor emeritus Dr. phil. habil. H. Ekkehard Wolff, University of Leipzig: Chair of African Languages & Linguistics will deliver a FREE Darwin lecture on ‘The Human Journey out of Africa – a perspective from language studies’ on Thursday March 11, 2010. This lecture takes issue with the ‘Out-of-Africa’ theory of the origin of MODERN (WO)MAN from a linguistic point of view by raising questions which ‘serious’ (mainstream) linguistics has always avoided to address, largely because they exceed the reach of established methods of historical-comparative linguistics. Based on combined recent evidence from climatology, archeology, paleoanthropology, biology (human genetics) challenging food for thought may eventually lead to revisions of ‘received wisdom’ among contemporary linguists. The lecture will raise a number of far-reaching questions from a linguistic vantage point without, however, being able to provide any final answers which, rather, still await focused interdisciplinary research involving Human Genetics as much as Linguistics, among others. The Darwin series is a project of the AGEI in partnership with the Department of Human Genetics, University of Cape Town and funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

11 March 2010

SoulBird performing at this platform for original South African talent as part of their cultural incentive for local artists. Along with their original compositions they combine to create a varied and eclectic blend of evocative and inspiring music. As a listener you are transported irresistibly on a soaring world music experience where cultural boundaries blur then vanish. Their show is anchored on a solid foundation of conventional Western music genres (mainly contemporary jazz, folk, rock an1d blues) and decades of experience in performance and composition. From this solid platform they invite you to take flight on a globetrotting journey, visiting your imagination on exotic musings to India, Africa, Tibet, the Middle East, Australia and the Caribbean. Tablas (Indian finger drums), Tibetan singing bowls, Oud (Middle Eastern Lute), Didgeridoo (origins in Australia) and *Hang (miniature steel drum with origins in the Caribbean) combine with saxophones, flute and guitar for a vividly colourful, musical event. SoulBird are : Christopher Tokalon on vocals, sax, flute and hang Ronan Skillen on tablas, didgeridoo and extended percussion Peter Nordling on guitars, bass and hoüd. *A Hang is a metal “spaceship” which looks like two woks welded together and is actually a miniature Carribean steel drum which is placed on your lap and played by hand. It has a beautiful, clear bell-like sound – almost like a cross between a guitar and harp.
