The battle of Clifton beach over December opened up a pandora’s
box over not only ongoing discussions of the legacy of Apartheid
spatial planning on Cape Town’s beaches, but also the expected
woke talk about decolonialisation. Activists from Black First Land First, the Black People’s National Crisis Committee and others wanted to know who exactly Clifton
was anyway? And have demanded the beach should be renamed after a precolonial hero like Xhosa warrior, philospher, and prophet Makhanda. The beach that Mellet suggests though is not Clifton, but Big Bay, or Bloubergstrand. Where Makhanda drowned while trying to escape from Robben Island.
