Budget 2020: Youth centres to be established to combat unemployment

26 February 2020 8:47 PM

Guest : Kristal Duncan-Williams | Project Lead at Youth Capital|

During his one-hour Budget Speech in Parliament on Wednesday 26 February, Finance
Minister Tito Mboweni said youth unemployment in the country stands at a whopping
8.2 million.
Mboweni went on to say that the government is committed to helping them —
something that we might have heard before…
He said: “8.2 million young people between the ages of 15 and 34 are not in education,
employment or training. Raising skills and improving the matching of young people and
jobs is an important focus of the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention.”
According to Mboweni’s Budget Speech, the Jobs Fund Projects, to date, have created:
More than 175 000 permanent jobs;
Helped 21 000 people to get internships, and
Created 59 900 short-term jobs.
Of those 59 900 jobs, Mboweni explained that 65% went to the youth.
