'How do you differentiate yourself from the rest' (33:48)

16 October 2019 11:21 PM

50 years back, to differentiate yourself was easy. All you needed was a degree and you would’ve gotten far in life. The reality today is very different— a degree doesn’t guarantee job security no more. What then do we need to stand out from our peers? How do we differentiate ourselves?
In principle, we should simply focus on acquiring the right skill sets for the desired job. Because that’s all employers look for right? Wrong! As it turns out, it’s been noticed that many employers look for someone who is passionate about a cause, someone who possesses a dazzling personality, and someone who pursues his/her hobbies outside school.
You probably have heard of many ways to upgrade yourself from rest and this evening Margaret Hirsch joined to discuss this……

Gold: Everyone's favorite precious metal. (40:28)

16 October 2019 9:15 PM

Gold is respected throughout the world for its value and rich history, which has been interwoven into cultures for thousands of years. Coins containing gold appeared around 800 B.C., and the first pure gold coins were struck during the rein of King Croesus of Lydia about 300 years later. Throughout the centuries, people have continued to hold gold for various reasons. Societies, and now economies, have placed value on gold, thus perpetuating its worth. It is the metal we fall back on when other forms of currency don't work, which means it always has some value as insurance against tough times. Below are eight potential reasons to own gold today.

South Africans prefer their children to be taught in English (42:19)

15 October 2019 11:05 PM

An inclusive and dynamic language policy plays an important role in South Africa’s mission to embrace linguistic and cultural diversity.

Within the education system, the nation has developed goals for multilingualism. However, this can be especially challenging to implement in a country like South Africa, where – since 1994 – there are 11 official languages.

The decision to adopt the current National Language Policy (NLP) was essentially a political one and, while inclusive of all 11 languages, policy planners radically miscalculated the character and strength of the social motivation required to drive language development of this kind and on the scale assumed by the NLP.
