Founded by Dr. Mitchell Besser in 2001, mothers2mothers has developed from a single support group in Cape Town to a multinational NGO with over 500 sites in seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Besser, a gynecologist who was working with at-risk pregnant women in both California and South Africa, served as a consultant for the clinical roll-out of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT). While working at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, he realised that evenwhen medical treatment was available to these women, it was often less than effective because of social, emotional and psychological barriers to success. To help break through those barriers, Besser enlisted other new mothers living openly with HIV/AIDS who, as Mentor Mothers, began to connect with and educate their pregnant peers. The result of these efforts is m2m today.
mothers2mothers is an innovative mentoring program offering comprehensive support for HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers. mothers2mothers has developed a unique model at the community level that is cost effective, easily replicable, scalable and adaptable to any culture.
Our services include:
- Regular support groups
- Formal and informal individual counseling
- Help with issues of stigma and disclosure to family and friends
- Comprehensive education sessions about HIV/AIDS, prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), personal and the newborn's well-being.
- Daily gatherings for nutritious lunches and nutrition education

The SOS Children's Villages South Africa is a private, charitable, social development organisation. It is politically and denominationally independent, and is an affiliated member of SOS-Kinderdorf International.
SOS Children's Villages build families for orphaned and abandoned children.
Eight to ten children are cared for in small family-type homes, the SOS families, and are raised like brothers and sisters. The head of the family is the SOS Mother, who provides the children with the affection and security they need for their sound development. This is supported by the Village-based Child and Youth Development team.
There are currently more than 950 children living permanently in the SOS Children's Villages in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Nelspruit and Rustenburg. Community based programmes strengthen families by caring for orphans and vulnerable children, with the aim of keeping these children in their families and communities of origin.
There are almost 4000 children and 1700 caregivers being supported through the Family Strengthening Programmes in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, and Nelspruit; and the three community social centres in Qwa Qwa, Mathanjana and Sekhukhune.
The SOS Children's Villages Association of South Africa is a member of SOS - Kinderdorf International, the largest private welfare organisation for children in the world. Over 200 000 children benefit from the various residential, educational and developmental programmes operating in 135 countries.
The varied and worldwide projects of SOS - Kinderdorf International are non-profit, apolitical, interdenominational and non-racial. The projects include SOS Children's Villages, SOS Family Strengthening Programmes, SOS Kindergartens, SOS Youth Facilities, Hermann Gmeiner Social Centres, SOS Relief Work, Hermann Gmeiner Schools, SOS Vocational Training and Production Centres and SOS Hermann Gmeiner Medical Centres.

The Kidzpositive Family Fund is dedicated to improving the health of HIV-positive children in Southern Africa. The goal is to generate funds for the grassroots support of mothers and children affected by HIV/AIDS. The aim is to become a regional source of financial support for organisations providing care for significant numbers of affected families.
Everyday reality is that mothers in Africa keep hoping. They continue to fight HIV/AIDS themselves, and devote themselves to caring for their sick children.
These are women who band together to support each other through the dark times when another mother's baby is fighting for breath. When their communities turn their backs, they are there to laugh and cry together. When a shoulder is needed to lean on, in times of grief, they are there beside each other. These mothers manage to fill a hospital ward with a sense of bustling optimism, despite a shortage of medicines and hospital staff.
A child with HIV/AIDS requires intensive, committed health care. Mother, nurse, doctor, social worker are all dedicated to ensuring that a child has the best care to live life with the minimum of suffering. They create a community which can provide the solidarity needed to fight a disease which has no cure.
Although it is a lethal condition, children with HIV infection can live for many years. With proper care they can be happy and enjoy life.
Founded in 1999, incorporated August 2001 as Section 21 Company (017-295 NPO) and under Section 18(c) of the Income Tax act as a Public Benefit Organisation

Even the smallest donations can make a difference, for example:
- R20 pays for return transport for a mother to visit her child at the children's HIV/AIDS clinic
- R25 buys a water container with tap-safe water in summer (ensuring that water-borne infections are not spread)
- R 200 will put food on the table. Many children are admitted to the paediatric ward with severe malnutrition, in addition to the illness which brought the child to hospital. Prior to this admission, the mother will not have known that her baby is HIV-positive. A South African governmental child care grant provides the mother with R 280 per month per child. Until such time as the grant application procedure has been completed, a bridging grant from Kidzpositive will support the child's access to food.

It is within the context of South Africa having the largest burden of HIV infection in Sub-Saharan Africa that Wola Nani works towards its vision of seeing the quality of life of persons living with HIV/Aids improved to an extent that they are living positively, with hope. Established in 1994, Wola Nani is one of the oldest non-governmental organizations in the Cape which consistently provides this type of service to women, men and children living with HIV AIDS and to those affected by HIV and AIDS.
Wola Nani’s services are predominately designed for the unemployed HIV infected women and children for two main reasons. The first, proven by studies, is that women are most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS due to a range of social, economic, biological, cultural and legal factors. The second, is that women are often, whether by choice or not, the consistent providers for the family in terms of food and care. In the same context, children offer suffer negative effects of poverty, disease and the breakdown in family-life. Children who live in poverty are all vulnerable – whether orphaned by HIV and AIDS or not and therefore children are a focal point of the work of Wola Nani, in addressing the social effects of HIV and AIDS.
The core business of Wola Nani remains the provision of psychosocial support to HIV infected and affected through counselling, support groups, childrens’ activity groups, education.
