Eleanor presents The Band Stand on Saturday night from 7pm to 10pm.
When I was seventeen “It Was A Very Good Year” – so goes the song made famous in the 60s by Frank Sinatra and for me that was so true. I had just started working and was earning my first salary, so as a teenager I had spending power!
On the radio I was listening to the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Cochrane, Petula Clark and Gary Puckett and The Union Gap but I was buying the LPs of music from the Bandstand era. Every weekend in our home my dad would be playing tunes of the Big Bands and we would hear the voices of Shirley Bassey, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald.
The sounds of the Ray Conniff Orchestra and Chorus would permeate every room in the house and unknowingly by osmosis I grew to love it all and many years and many salaries later I am still happily spending on CDs to further increase my collection, only now I’m privileged to be able to share it on Saturday evenings!
Like many of the listeners, the music of the Bandstand era is the music of my childhood and it brings back warm and wonderful memories. |

It’s then reprocessed and together with compositional tools, improvisation and interconnected synergy, new musical structures as a collective are formed. This combines the worlds of jazz, modern, electronica, African, folk, world, free improvisation, classical and embodies the fusion of all these musicians’ experiences and those they encounter moving towards a non-labelled genre.

This year’s Artscape Women’s Festival will strike at the heart with its thoughtful ‘Love Responsibly’ theme presented via four theatre productions and 13 workshops in August.
This annual gathering of gender activists, artists and anyone interested in celebrating women’s achievements and to experience cutting edge workshops that intends to address the need in our society to empower and enlighten our men and women how to appreciate each other as human beings. This will take place at Artscape Theatre in central Cape Town during the first week of August. And let’s not forget that it will most definitely also entertain. Marlene Le Roux, director of Artscape Theatre’s Audience Development and Education Department that runs the festival, says the event speaks to an urgent need that a caring society needs to be instilled in South Africa. “Consider the dangerous manner in which women in South Africa love and are loved. Consider that South African women have the highest incidence of HIV/Aids in the world; that violence against women is directly linked to causing this epidemic,” elaborates Le Roux. “Ours is a country in which men need to learn to love responsibly, love in a way that no longer carries risks for women.” Her words indicate that men are also role-players in advancing women’s rights and security. After all, men are society’s fathers, brothers and women’s partners.
The anchor of this festival is a well-respected clinical sexologist, Dr Marlene Wasserman a.k.a. Dr Eve, who will host sessions about the importance of the holistic well-being of women and men. Dr Eve’s workshops, which run August 5 to 7, will unpack a host of fascinating topics. This includes ‘sex when you are sick’, ‘know your legal rights and understand the power of education’ and ‘how to raise sexually healthy children’. Among the partners that form the panel discussions within workshops are Famsa, SASHA and the Triangle Project. Dr Eve will also partner with Nia Dance Technique South Africa to present a ‘Danceshop’ that opens an understanding “for women to reconnect to their sexuality”. A full programme of workshops and seminars beyond Dr Eve’s involvement has also been scheduled.
Gender Dynamix will host a workshop to question the meaning of an ‘African woman’. Another seminar will investigate how race, class, sexual orientation and gender identity can serve as barriers when accessing services such as shelters. There’s even a belly dancing workshop to experience the feeling of moving like a belly dancer in your own body. The ‘Men’s Discussion Forum’ brings on board male voices via the Sonke Gender Justice group which hosts a discussion and debate around gender equality, discrimination and gender-based violence.
On the theatre front, entertainment will enliven the passion that we all need to share regarding women’s rights. The line-up includes ‘I, Claudia’ which is an award-winning one-woman play that humourously unpacks critical teen issues of identity, individuality, transformation, peer pressure and parental and family relations. This award-winning one-woman play is written by Kristen Thomson from Canada, features unique masks created by Melani-Rene Louwrens and is directed by Lara Bye. Experienced performer Euodia Samson meanwhile directs a play ‘Dêns Wit Me’ that depicts the lives of ordinary women. It tells the story of a cleaner who puts her dancing talent to the test and comes out tops. Women’s voices will also come together on stage for the ‘Sistahood and Women Unite in Concert’ show.
This concert will feature Sistahood, the all-women band under the leadership of Celeste Williams, and Thandi Swartbooi’s all women marimba band Women Unite. They will focus on Cape Town’s rich and unique diversity through music, dance and poetry.

We are totally dependent on voluntary donations - we do not receive any government funding to support our work. Furthermore most of our clients are not able to contribute towards the cost of the required treatment and/or surgery. We have grown to an extent, where this year we treated between 200 – 235 000 companion animals, who would otherwise not have received any alternative treatment and are not able to speak.
The proceeds of this event will be used to acquire surgical equipment for our hospitals - there is a great need for this equipment as it enables us to offer the best veterinary service in all our hospitals.

The Big Band Musical Appreciation Society
The Society meets on the second Sunday afternoon of each month in St Johns College, Houghton, Johannesburg, and their secretary, Barney Segal, can be contacted for any information on 011 615 3412.
The society was formed in the 1990’s and housed in Sable House in Braamfonteirn, before moving four years ago to their present location at the Jeffrey Auditorium in Houghton. Their chairman, Jack Mink, has emphasized the need for younger members to join the society. Their motto is “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got swing” and this describes exactly the music that is either shown on videos or DVD’s at their meetings, or is played from CD’s. Music collectors and speakers, such as Don Albert and Harry Fidler, will often give informative talks on the music of the 30’s and 40’s, and showcase those talks with slides and shows form their own personal collections.
A tea is served during the afternoon and is a chance for like-minded musicians and those with a love of Big Band music to get together and reminisce.
The Society meets on the second Sunday afternoon of each month in St Johns College, Houghton, Johannesburg, and their secretary, Barney Segal, can be contacted for any information on 011 615 3412. |

Track Five is a five-voice vocal group, specialising in tasteful arrangements of well-known, popular jazz favourites and original compositions. The group performs A Cappella as well as with trio or big band and was formed in 1995 by director and arranger Gavin Fullard (formerly director of Tangerine Vocal Group). Their influences include the unfailingly exciting sounds of great vocal groups such as Four Freshmen, Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, New York Voices and the Real Group as well as the nostalgia and magic evoked by groups of the Big Band era.
They have just released their third CD: Track Five A Cappella, which includes songs such as Waltz for Debbie, Cherokee, Ntjilo Ntjilo, Have you met Miss Jones, etc. Track Five hopes to do concerts in Johannesburg on 13 and 14 March 2010. For more information visit their website www.track5.co.za |
