Quintessential Cape Town: Gugulethu families turn their homes into art gallaries

8 April 2016 9:30 AM

The Maboneng Township Arts Experience turn Gugulethu families homes into exhibition spaces for local artists.

Siphiwe Ngwenya is the founder of Maboneng Township Art. He is an artist himself growing up in Alexandra Township, and 11 years ago got tired of waiting around trying to find gallery space to exhibit his work.

Galleries told me there was a two year waiting list, and I am not the type of person to wait around...so I started working from home, and looking at ways to use the streets and walls to take our art work out there.

What we offer is a beautiful experience for visitors locally and from all over the world to come and experience township in a very innovative way. What we do is we turn homes in townships into art galleries and welcome local and international artists to come and visit there.

It becomes a really collaborative project where we partner with families.

Ngwenya says it is helping close the gap between townships and the suburbs, and townships and the rest of the world.
