27 April 2016 1:45 PM

The director of the new Paedspal Palliative Care unit which opened its doors in Cape Town explains the functions of the facility.

Last week saw the opening of the Paedspal Palliative Care unit at the Rondebosch Medical Centre, the first of its kind in this province.

The facility is being officially launched today.

The Paedspal Palliative Care unit will provide care and support for children living with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses.

It gives children the freedom to live as comfortably as possible, even when they are desperately ill.

According to Dr Michelle Meiring who is director of the new programme and a paediatrician, it has taken six years to finally have this kind of facility opened in Cape Town.

Listen to the full conversation below:

With Palliative Care, even though there is nothing that can be done from the curative perspective there is a lot that we can do to help and to support you through your journey.

Dr Michelle Meiring, paediatrician

We work not only on treatment of pain and medical aspects but also the psychological and emotional support that is required on a very difficult journey
