Sharkspotters app will be realtime warning system
Sharkspotters was started in 2004 to help warn surfers, swimmers and beachgoers about the presence of sharks in the waters of Cape beaches.
They have now gone digital and are creating an app which will have real-time information from all the beaches where the team operates as well as handy information surfers may need such as safety alerts, spotting conditions, whale activity, surf reports and environmental conditions.
Sarah Waries, Sharkspotters Project Manager, spoke to Kieno Kammies about this new app.
We operate on eight beaches in Cape Town, mostly in False Bay where we have the highest spatial overlap between people and sharks.Sarah Waries, Sharkspotters Project Manager.
Waries says the idea for the app came out of requests from the community, who were always calling to find out things like which shark warning flag was flying and recent shark sightings.
We are in a brilliant position to give it to them being the only people on the beach from sunrise to sunset, 356 days a year.Sarah Waries, Sharkspotters Project Manager.
Waries says the app will be a 'one-stop shop' for all beach safety information in realtime provided by the shark spotters on the 8 beaches.
Sharkspotters have started a crowdfunding campaign and have raised half the R60 000 they need for the new project through public donations.
