Tax Ombud to get greater powers to keep Sars in check

25 October 2016 8:00 PM

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviews Tax Ombud Judge Bernard Ngoepe.

The Finance Minister will soon determine our budget. And that money will be controlled by the Tax Ombud and not Sars.

The Tax Ombud is calling for greater powers.

Currently, the Ombud cannot compel Sars to respond to its recommendations.

The Ombud can also not initiate investigations, but can only investigate issues after receiving a formal complaint.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Judge Bernard Ngoepe, Tax Ombud at Office of the Tax Ombud for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Ngoepe discussed the proposed Tax Amendments Bill.

Listen to interview of the Ombud below (and/or scroll down for more quotes form it).

The majority of complaints are resolved in favour of tax payers.
