2016 news wrap: A look back at the stories that grabbed SA's attention

28 December 2016 4:38 PM

Barry Bateman spoke to Stephen Grootes to unpack the meaning behind the stories that dominated the headlines in 2016.

The headlines that grabbed our attention in 2016 are most certainly Robert McBride taking on Minister Nathi Nhleko in the Constitutional Court and Shaun Abrahams instituting charges against Mininster Pravin Gordhan and later dropping them.

That's according to EWN senior reporter, Barry Bateman, who shared his take on why the issues mattered and how they are likely to unfold in 2017.

However in 2016, he [Robert McBride] will go down as the man who secured the independence of police watchdog Ipid.

NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) head, Shaun Abrahams, then announced a decision to prosecute Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in relation to an early retirement payment to Ivan Pillay (former Sars deputy commisioner) during his tenure as SARS Commissioner in 2010.

A few weeks later, Abrahams called another press conference to announce that the charges had been dropped. He was accused of acting under political influences opposed to Gordhan's position of not being favourable towards the controversial Gupta family.

Gordhan then became the roadblock to controlling the state purse. A decision to prosecute him would remove him from the position.
