All things go for Cape Town City Ballet's new home

3 April 2017 2:07 PM

Ballet Company booted from the University of Cape Town amid reports that Fees Must Fall protesters said it was too colonial.

Cape Town City Ballet was based at the UCT School of Dance for many years but was told they needed to move premises by the end of 2016.

It has taken 18 months for the Cape Town City Ballet to find a new home after they were kicked out by the University of Cape Town (UCT).

It's still unclear why the ballet company was removed from its home of 82 years. Reports have suggested that the Fees Must Fall protesters claimed it was too colonial.

Executive director, Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt, explains that UCT's explanation was that the drama and dance departments are amalgamating and need more space.

The ballet company has now found a new home in the Rondebosch Sports Club and will be sharing the premises with other sports clubs.

Triegaardt says they have completed the renovations to make the venue suitable for dance, but still negotiating with the City of Cape Town to use the place permanently.

We are due to move in next week Thursday and Friday.

I can't imagine how they have coped in these months with having no permanent and dedicated rehearsal place. I think they can't wait to see our new premises, move in and be home.
