The restrictions include far stricter rules around the use of drinking water.

Water shortages remain critical in Cape Town.

Last week dam levels were at 22,8% (storage levels), 0,6% down from the previous week. With the last 10% of a dam’s water mostly not being useable, dam levels are effectively at 12,3%.

Councillor Xanthea Limberg says the City is busy finalising proposals for further intensified water restrictions.

We are looking at implement level four restrictions as of the 1st of June, obviously pending council approval.

That will be combined with level 4 tariffs which will probably be implemented at the beginning of July when we adopt our formal 2017/2018 budget.

In level four, all of those external uses of water will be completely banned essentially and so we will really look at further interventions at completely cutting down the use of potable or drinking water for any external purposes, we really want to entrench the practice of only using potable water for essential services....

The details of the restrictions will be communicated to residents over the next few weeks.
