WATCH: Robben Island gets solar farm and goes green
Robben Island, one of the world’s top tourist attraction spots, will now generate its power from solar panels.
The island, which previously relied solely on diesel generators, has transitioned to solar energy.
The heritage site is the pilot for the Tourism Department’s plan to roll out solar power to other significant attraction sites.
Government has partnered with SOLA Future Energy for the project and the solar plant will save the island an estimated R5 million every year.
SOLA Future Energy CEO says the solar farm has been built on a hectare of space on the island's old cricket field.
