'Structures nullified by court rulings won’t be voting at conference'

Gwede Mantashe says the NEC made the decision to ensure that there are no circumstances that could lead to a collapse of the conference.

JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has announced that some delegates from Kwazulu-Natal, North West and the Free State will not be allowed to vote at the national conference.

The national executive committee met for more than two hours behind closed doors to discuss the matter.

A briefing is also expected by the ANC at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto, where there have been some problems with registration.

Mantashe has also confirmed that the official start of the high stakes gathering will only now begin at 2 pm this afternoon.

“The decision taken there is that it’s the Free State, it’s KwaZulu-Natal and then Bojanala. All the structures that are nullified will not be voting delegates at the conference. We’re not going to try any idea that will actually contaminate the conference.”

WATCH: Mantashe gives update on special NEC outcomes ahead of conference

Meanwhile, some delegates appear to be unaware of the NEC's decision.

Hundreds of delegates are still making their way into the plenary singing songs in support of their preferred candidates.

A large group of delegates from KwaZulu-Natal has arrived, making their way into the plenary session singing songs in support of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

But they don't appear to be aware of that announcement made by Mantashe just a few minutes ago.

“It’s precisely because she’s the only appropriate person to take the movement and the country to great heights, particularly with regard to the economy because what we have won in 1994 was just politics.”

Also, seemingly undeterred are some delegates from the Free State who are determined to vote for Dlamini Zuma.
