Rising culinary star Vusumuzi Ndlovu cooked up a storm at an international competition and secured a spot in the global top 7.

Rising culinary star Vusumuzi Ndlovu has put SA on the map after he was named the 7th best young chef of 2018 in a global competition.

Ndlovu came seventh in the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 awards that took place in Milan, Italy last week.

Ndlovu is the head chef at The Marabi Club in Joburg and he says that his achievement still feels very surreal.

The 26-year-old won the semi-final leg of the awards, competing against nine other top young chefs in the Africa and Middle East region.

In the final leg of the international competition, he went head-to-head with 20 other top chefs in a cook-off.

Ndlovu says the win will open doors for him to collaborate with other star chefs from across the world.

He spoke about the preparation required for the competition and his winning signature dish, titled "Isicupho".

I still don't believe it... I'm getting a lot of love.

Vusumuzi Ndlovu, Head Chef at The Marabi Club

It feels really good, I worked so hard on this dish.

Vusumuzi Ndlovu, Head Chef at The Marabi Club

The dish is titled "Isicupho", which means "trap" in Zulu.

Vusumuzi Ndlovu, Head Chef at The Marabi Club

It was a duck which I aged for five weeks. It had a grain porridge. It had heavily smoked duck leg biltong and pumpkin fermented in umqombothi.

Take a listen to him describe the inspiring victory:
