What does the research really say about the demand for land in SA?

Research from 1994 reveals that 67.7% of South African black rural households wanted farm land.

The EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi recently questioned former Business Day editor Peter Bruce over his claims that only a small fraction of the South African population wants to farm.

So is there any validity to Bruce's claims.

Senior Researcher at Africa Check Kate Wilkinson has been finding out.

Wilkinson takes a look at research dating back to 1994, by the Land and Agricultural Policy Centre, which reveals that 67.7% of South African black rural households wanted farm land.

When it comes to studies and research like this, we might think this is a good baseline, but it is also important that we understand what the research can and can't tell us.

There is a little bit of caution that needs to be taken with this number. The first is that farming has never been defined. Most importantly, the survey was not not nationally representative.
