The broadcasting regulator says streaming operators like Netflix not a threat to pay-TV market, plans to limit DStv's dominance.

Broadcasting regulator Icasa says it's considering new restrictions for DStv owner Multichoice in an effort to curb its market dominance.

Icasa released the draft findings of its inquiry into subscription television broadcasting services in South Africa.

The regulator could potentially limit the number of Hollywood movies that MultiChoice is allowed to buy the rights to, explains Business Insider's Phillip de Wet.

Icasa also wants to change the rules on MutliChoice's broadcasting rights for major sporting events.

According to De Wet, Icasa has found that streaming operators such as Netflix and ShowMax do not pose a major threat to the pay television sector.

Icasa says the impact of these online services is muted because of the limited access to broadband and internet services, the cost of data and low internet speeds.

There have been a couple of attempts to break the monopoly that DStv has over the pay-TV market in South Africa.

Wannabe pay-TV operators have come and gone, online streaming operators have come and gone. It looks like DStv will monopolise until the foreseeable future.
