Nelson Mandela Foundation's Sello Hatang, Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, Martin Locke pay tribute to SA music icon Johnny Clegg who died.

On Tuesday South African music icon Johnny Clegg had passed away after a 5 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

One of the most memorable moments was Nelson Mandela sharing a stage with Clegg as he sang the anti-apartheid anthem Asimbonanga he wrote for Madiba in 1987.

Nelson Mandela Foundation chief executive officer, Sello Hatang says he last saw Clegg at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2016.

And he was just himself, giving off that energy that we are used t from him, but you could see he was suffering. But he did not let that put a damper on the event which was to help children.

Sello Hatang, CEO - Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Foundation sends heartfelt condolences to the family of the man who Hatang says participated in every single event there from its inception.

The loss is to the entire country.

Sello Hatang, CEO - Nelson Mandela Foundation

He helped mend the fractured wounds of the country, says Hatang.

May we repeat Asimbonanga, but may we repeat it with the words, we remember you, we saw you, Johnny, and we know what you tried to do, and we will follow in your footsteps.

Sello Hatang, CEO - Nelson Mandela Foundation

Nelson Mandela had great praise and love for Clegg.

Madiba said at one point, Johnny's music can give you a combination of despair and hope at the same time...he also said to Johnny himself, South Africa needs more of you.

Sello Hatang, CEO - Nelson Mandela Foundation

Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse sends his deepest condolences to Clegg's wife jenny and his sons.

My relationship with Johnny was more than just about music. I was privileged to have been so close to him.

Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, Musician

Former broadcaster Martin Locke describes an unforgettable 1986 concert with a lineup including Johnny Clegg, Sipho Mabuse, Hotline and more.

80 000 rock fans of every colour poured through the gates of Ellis Park. Fans joined hands, danced and sang together.
