Bicycle theft on the rise in Cape Town

23 September 2015 3:57 PM

According to Bike Hub, bicycle theft is higher in Cape Town than anywhere else in the country with 124 thefts reported in 2015.

The Western Cape has a particularly high level of bike thefts which are stolen from homes and vehicles.

There have been 205 incidents of stolen bikes in South Africa alone this year, with 124 thefts reported in the Western Cape.

The latest incident involved a botched attempt over the weekend where a man chased down a thief who had stolen his bike.

The thief was handed over to the police in Green Point for the theft of a bicycle from the back of a vehicle on Saturday.

CapeTalk’s Mike Wills (standing in for John Maytham) speaks to Matt Eager, Founder of Bike Hub who confirms that there’s been a great increase in bicycle theft in Cape Town.

We have over 60 percent of reported theft across the country taking place in the Western Cape.

Eager says there’s under reporting for bike theft that cost less. Most of the reported bikes that are stolen cost more than R40 000.
