Food drive to feed foreign nationals during lockdown

Food drive to feed foreign nationals during lockdown

7 July 2020 8:28 AM

The lockdown in South Africa has been synonymous with hunger, unemployment and unpaid UIF relief schemes and social grants. Many families have not been able to put food on the table, but EWN’s news anchor and assignments editor Aurelie Kalenga has been running a food drive to feed foreign nationals in underprivileged areas throughout Johannesburg.

This after she received numerous calls from members of her church who were seeking assistance applying for food parcels or social relief grants. She has moved from just feeding 40 families to now 600 families.

Bongani joined by Aurelie Kalenga, EWN’s Assignments Editor.

Right of Reply: Life Esidimeni families owed 65 million rand

6 August 2020 7:45 AM

It just never ends, with the Gauteng department of health. The latest shocker, two years since former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke ordered that families of the 144 mental health patients who died after being removed from Life Esidimeni facilities be compensated, some are still yet to be paid. Justice Moseneke ordered the compensation to be paid at just over a million rand per family.

But the legal representatives of some of the families say about R65 million is still owed to some of their clients, and are now threatening court action against the provincial government. These families, it must be noted were not part of arbitration process.

Bongani joined by Ulrich Roux, Criminal Attorney, Ulrich Roux and Associates and Thabo Masebe, Gauteng Provincial Government Spokesperson.

Zimbabwe focus: MDC Alliance and Zanu-PF speak out

5 August 2020 7:44 AM

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangangwa has come guns blazing at his critics saying "bad apples" who had tried to divide citizens and weaken his country’s systems would be flushed out. In his briefing to the nation, he also called for unity in efforts to ease tensions. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accused protesters of staging an insurrection and unleashed security forces in the two main cities of Harare and Bulawayo.

Over a hundred African writers are calling on the African Union and SADC to end their silence and suspend Zimbabwe. The crackdown on dissent comes as millions of Zimbabweans are on the brink of starvation caused by massive job losses brought about by a COVID 19 nationwide lockdown. Questions have been asked on what is SADC (the Southern African Development Community) doing about the situation in Zimbabwe,

Why is South Africa quiet? What are the obligations of SADC and the African Union to Zimbabweans?

Bongani speaks to Senator David Coltart, MDC Alliance Treasurer General, former Cabinet Minister in Zimbabwe and Tafadzwa Mugwadi, ZANU-PF Director of Information and Publicity.
