Cape Town dubbed most congested city in SA (again)

"This is according to the TomTom Traffic Index 2017‚ an annual report detailing the cities around the world with the worst traffic congestion. In a study of 390 cities‚ Johannesburg — SA’s most densely populated city —stood out for its implementation of effective traffic management systems across the city‚ earning special recognition from an international panel of traffic experts."

An Urban Mobility Summit took place in Cape Town on Monday to explore what it will take to reduce traffic congestion. Rashiq Fataar, Founder and Director of Future Cape Town says summit didn't come up with any new solutions and ideas on mainly how to use technology to integrate public transport to serve those that need mobility options.

When they say congestion, they're speaking about car based traffic congestion. They're speaking about single occupancy vehicles sitting on highways.

The way to solve car based traffic congestion is not with more car lanes, its not with more road infrastructure.

Fataar says the solution to car based traffic congestion is public transport. He adds that the apartheid legacy and decades of under investment are some of the reasons public transport isn't yet an immediate solution. Fataar says cities and towns need to catch up.

We need to get on those buses, walk and cycle as much as we can as the investments are being made in the next few decades.
